Crossword Helper
Enter the letters you know and use _ for each blank square.
How to use the crossword helper
- Count the squares in the answer and type the pattern, for example _R_N_E for a six-letter word.
- Results appear as you type, in alphabetical order.
- Use Filters to exclude letters or require letters you know are somewhere in the answer.
Example patterns
- C_A_T for five-letter words like CHART and COAST
- _R_N_E for six-letter words like ORANGE and BRONZE
- Q___ for four-letter words starting with Q
Crossword solving tips
- Solve the short answers first. Three- and four-letter answers give you crossing letters for the long ones.
- Check the tense and number. A plural clue usually means an answer ending in S.
- Use the crossings. Even one or two fixed letters cut the list of candidates dramatically.
Frequently asked questions
How do I enter a crossword pattern?
Type the letters you know and use an underscore (_) or question mark (?) for each missing letter. For example, C_A_T finds CHANT, CHART and COAST.
How long can a pattern be?
Patterns can be 2 to 15 letters long, which covers almost every answer in a standard crossword.
Can I exclude letters I know are wrong?
Yes. Open Filters and type the letters to exclude. You can also require letters that must appear somewhere in the word.
Does the crossword helper use clues?
No. It matches letter patterns, not clue meanings. Use it to check which real words fit the squares you have already filled.
